I just bought a used 2000 klr. The guy who had it before me was running a synthetic oil. I am about to do my first oil change, and will be running a non-synthetic oil. The guy seemed to think that going from synthetic to non was a bad idea. Personally I don't think it will matter. As long as the engine has some slippery molecules in there, I don't think it cares what we call it. Could I be wrong on this, anyone have any input on this? Also, the bike did not come with an owners manual, and so I don't know if I need a gasket to go on the oil filter cover.(does it have a gasket, and if so is it re-usable). Does castrol 20w50 sound like a good oil choice? The bike also came with the stock windscreen as well as the taller kawasaki wind screen. I am riding with the taller windscreen and a partial face helmut. There is a lot of wind noise. If I squish myself down about 3-4 inches it is much calmer and quieter. So I am wondering what the best solution solution might be: a taller aftermarket windscreen, or a full face helmet. Also, does the shorter srock windscreen keep the wind lower and out of your face. Does anyone know of a good non-leather riding pant that includes hip-armor? Would appreciate feedback on any or all of the above. Jeff

The bike seems to shift a little better for a little longer on synth oil. Otherwise, there is very little evidence that synth is accomplishing anything in a KLR.

I've re-used mine for 33k miles. Castrol GTX will work fine.

Try no windscreen at all and see how you like it.

Jeff, Owners manual states: SE , SF SAE10W40, 20W40, 10W50, 20W50 As for oil filter cover gasket, it is an o-ring. Carefully pull the cover off and it is re-useable (for how long? Just inspect it as you change the filter). As for synth vs. dino....this is a subject better left alone

The wind noise you are experiencing is buffeting across the top of your helmet. A full face won't make this go away, but is more protective overall. You must be a tall one. I'm 5'8" and just barely have to duck or look downward to make the noise stop (I have the tall windscreen too). a shorter screen will reduce the noise as the wind is directed into your face or chest. Take the tall one off and see. Todd (Springfield, VA)

Won't bother it at all, I use Castro 30w.

There is an O-Ring, and it is re-usable. Does castrol 20w50 sound like a good oil

The original intent was to keep the wind off you upper torso, (chest).
