starter run on

I had the craziest thing happen to me yesterday. I pulled up to a friends house to show off my new Givi set up. We talked for a minute or two and when I went to restart my bike the starter kept running. I shut the motor down and it quit running but the starter kept pushing me across the yard. I put her in neutral and ripped off the seat(I don't use the seat bolts)and disconnected the battery. By the time I got it stopped the battery was already flat. What could possibly cause this. Oh, I forgot to mention that the starter kept running even when the key was switched off. I put it all back together, got a jumnp from my friend and rode it for a while with no problems. It hasn't happened again but I would like to prevent it happening again if possible. Joe S. A-12

I just had this problem on my bike this last fall. Really upsetting. Especially when the starter is running and you can't hear it because the engine is running. It is a bad starter relay. It is found under the gas tank petcock. Large brass dome, it sits between two large wires that connect the starter to the battery. When the relay goes bad, it will stay in the "on" position sending power to the starter no matter the key position. My Kawi dealer said that they replace a lot of these relays on ATVs. It is the same part as on the KLR so they should have them in stock. hope this helps bALex

I had the same experience with my A7. Not changing on my A16 as the mileage also drops a BUNCH with these changes. Turn out the pilot screw, and let 'er go... Just installing the KLX needle, even at a lean setting, cost me about 9mpg. Doesn't sound like much, but that's almost 45 miles further before reserve. But then again, I understand the desire... MNRon Just my $.01 worth...
