how far do you go before reserve?

I purchased my 01 KLR in January and have recently completed my 1k
brake in period. One of the freakish things that I have noticed is
that the last three times I had to switch to reserve the trip meter
read 229 miles on the tank. At this point I only have to put in
about 4-1/2 gal. meaning that there is still about 2 gal left in the
tank.
Is this normal and is there a way to adjust this so I don't hit
reserve until about 1 gal. left?
How many miles do you get out of a tank before having to switch to
reserve?

Wow, maybe I should put the bike back to stock jetting. I'm hitting
reserve at a 170 miles!! About 38 mpg. Nothing comes for free Huh.

Steve,
230 miles before going on reserve is normal, if you are not riding hard or
fast. I figure it will go about 40 miles on reserve. When you run out on
reserve, it will hold 5.7 gal. or when you run out, lean the bike as far to
the left as you can, and get about 4 more miles. Then it will hold 5.8.
Next time I have the tank off, I think I will completly empty it, and push
the bike across the street to fill it. I'd like to know if there is any way
to get 6.1 in it. Don't know where Kawasaki came up with 6.1.

With an older 4" dia. supertrapp and an open airbox with k&n I go to
reserve at about 215. When I fill up rarely put in more than 4.9
gallons to fill it. I also do not lean the bike over to slosh the gas
around unless there is no station in the area.

Usually I go on reserve about 210-230 miles, once you go on reserve,
go get gas (I give it 10-15 miles max on reserve) there is probably
less than a gallon of gas in the tank once you go on reserve and half
of that you won't get to even if you do lean the bike to left to get
to the gas in the other side of the tank. I don't chance it anymore,
when the bike gets around 200 and I see a gas station I stop, It only
takes 2 mins to fill it up, I usually don't even have to get off the
bike.

I usually go to reserve between 275 and 300 miles where I have to add
between 4.5 and 5 gallons.
Usually I fill up at 250 miles so that I have a choice in the matter.

I usually have to switch to reserve at 225 miles and it takes 4.8
gals to fill my A15. You could probably find a petcock with a shorter
reserve tube or modify the one that's in the bike. Personally I like
the fact that my KLR has a 50+ mile reserve capacity in case I brain
cramp and forget how much fuel I have in the tank. Besides, can
anyone ride their KLR for more than 200 miles without getting off for
a rest?? You're a lot tougher than I am if you can.

Fred at Arrowhead sells a center stand from Germany. According to
Fred, this more of a ride-off stand and has some advantages over Dual-
Star's stand. Take a look at his web site. You probably won't reach
him this weekend as this is The Rally weekend, but give him a call
next week and see what he has to say.
Just my $.02 worth...
