Switched bikes at lunch today and now riding the Sherpa. Noticed it
should of had it's 600 mi check up about 654 miles ago. (gulp)
I bought a manual and spare oil filters for it when purchased but have
yet to open them. Yeah I know, I'll spend time in gear head purgatory
for this.
Anything special to doing the initial maintenance on the Sherpa? Are
valve adjustment part of that maintenance? Any trick or just standard
shim under bucket. (I haven't looked, just guessing)
Thanks,
Dan /|\

Hi Dan and All,
First time poster here, tho I've been lurking for a while. I am the proud
owner of a 2001 Super Sherpa. As far as valve maintanance, the manual calls
for a valve adjustment at 500 miles and then again at 6000 miles, much like
the KLR650. I had the dealer do my first valve adjustment when I hit the 500
mile mark so I don't know how difficult the procedure is. (But if my dealer
can do it it can't be too hard, Har.) I change my oil every 1000 miles or so
and that is a breeze. I can complete an oil change in less than 10 minutes.
To the best of my knowledge (and the sherpa service manual) it is the shim
and bucket arrangement. Let me know how it goes as I would like to adjust my
own valves next time it's done. Goodluck.

Dan, I'll be honest and say right up front that I'm totally clueless about
the Sherpa, so this is a kind of a blanket comment. On my KLR, I found that
the valves were bottom of spec tight at the 500 mile check, and that at the
3000 mile (+/-) check, they had stayed pretty much right where I had set
them at 500. as I remember, I think one of two were down by .001. I would
guess that you should get in there as soon as possible...
If it's an arrangement like the KLR, you might find my procedure useful,
although there may very well be Sherpa specific websites, I don't know. (If
there ARE, anyone please pass them along and I'll add them to my links
page.)

It is very similar (a little easier to remove the top), and your guide is superb. I did my KLR and Sherpa the same day; easy as pie, both. (Er, measured tolerances; didn't actually need to adjust anything.)

I towed my 1963 BSA from Las Vegas to Bakersfield,CA. I made a hitch for my
1982 Toyota Supra from a bed frame angle iron.(I think spring steel very
hard) I made it so the axle would clamp to it in the center where the front
wheel hub would be.U-bolts work fine. Attach your tie-downs drive around a
bit and re-tighten your straps.Yes remove the chain. My brother-in-law was
the brain behind this. He towed his Gold Star from Fort Benning GA to Las
Vegas this way. Every gas stop check the straps. I will never use a bike
trailer again. TC

How do you like the Super Sherpa? It's a lot lighter than the KLR
for sure. Never rode one and was curious.
