break-in noises?

Hello all, I've got ~1700 miles on my '01 KLR650 and it sounds like the valve springs are making noises only when hot. All I hear is "springing" noises coming from under the tank...I can't seem to identify the noises more clearly than that. I did the break-in oil and filter change with no problems last year. The bike is ridden year round on short trips of <3 miles. It seems to run perfectly with easy starting (no choke required) and good power. In fact the bike has been flawless and I'm very happy with it. I don't know if this is a problem or normal. Could the top end still be in the break-in stage? I tried the list archives...it doesn't seem to work? Thanks, David [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

It's normal for the valvetrain to be noisier when the motor is hot and the oil thins out. Year-round short trips counts as "extreme service", especially in the winter whne the motor never fully warms up. You should be changing the oil every couple months using the bike like this, and the filter every other oil change. You would be doing the bike a favor by taking it out once a week, or every other week, and wringing its neck for a half-hour or so on twisties and the highway. This will fully heat up the engine, drive most of the water out of the oil (which I guarantee you have due to condensation) and properly heat-cycle the rings and piston in case you haven't properly broken in the motor. Devon '01 with 12,500mi, and I swear it gets faster the more I run in the motor. Ronssito@... wrote:

I just ordered a 6.6 gal plastic tank from IMS and the guy on taking my order said the "natural" color would look best on my 2001 KLR650. Does anyone have an IMS tank in the "natural" color? If so how does it look on your bike? I was thinking of one of their green colors but they said they have two greens and one is out of stock.
