klr wheelies

Kind of ironic actually. I could never wheelie streetbikes, (I had a 2002
Yamaha R6), I bought it expecting the thing to wheelie like i see all the
guys in videos doing. I couldn't get it to wheelie no matter what I did. My
first time on the KLR, didnt have a tank or panels or anything, was running
on gas out of a little can, (also first time on a four stroke) I was able to
hold a wheelie down the street. I guess the only thing i can recommend is to
run high octane, put it in second and keep it at about 2k rpms, and suddenly
pin the throttle. My way of wheelieing sounds like the dumb way, but it
works. I think I'll try the clutch thing next time, although it didnt work on
my streetbike.

Seriously, you can wheelie your KLR from a 2k rpm roll in 2nd gear
with stock gearing and engine configuration? Doesn't seem possible.

I have to agree that the KLR has some wide ranging abilities.
I NEVER thought I would want a d/s bike this big. That was a thought
over the last two decades at least.
Well, well.. started reading the adventure touring articles and
realized the potential of the KLR and like bikes. Dan rides around the
world. well one continent at a time my boy!
Decided that the KLR might be the ONE bike I would have left when I
retire (5-10 yrs?)(currently also have the Concours, KLX 650-R and ole
'70 Suzook T500 Titan two smoke street bike)
Bought my '00 in OCT 99 and just the next Mar '00 was heading to the
Copper Canyon. Next year KLR rally in Moab including the canyon
trails, Lasal Mtns ..plus Four Corners, Monument Valley, Valley of the
Gods, Capital reef and the Burr trail, etc... whew what a great 8 days
in Utah!
So somewhat grizzled and into my 4 th decade of being a moto brain I
find new horizons.. kewl, so cool.
Trails, dirt roads, highways and freeways. Heck don't need a road even.
BTW, just ordered the Rosseler (sp) fork and shock springs from Fred.
Seems like I bottom the suspension out in the dirt and is just sacked
even on the street. Ahem, at #260 I am prolly #100 over the designed
rider weight. On the 2001 Black Dog d/s ride at Mt Hood OR,the
suspension bottomed out frequently, but only when I pushe it.. hee
hee. See ya on the trail and road.
