too lean? too rich?

Hi:
I have a 2001 KLR650 and it is popping pretty regularly on
deceleration. It is also making a loud pop in between agressive
shifts.
As far as I know, it has the stock air filter and jetting. It has a
SuperTrapp IDS2 though.
Are these symptoms of running too lean or rich? If so, should I
worry about it?

Cover one third to one half of your air filter with duct tape (it's easier
with a K&N). If it runs better the bike is lean.
I've heard it here a few times where guys have been trying to correct
popping on deceleration through jetting changes. Why? The carb slide is
closed on deceleration. It usually has more to do with backpressure in the
exhaust. If your bike stumbles on acceleration or won't pull high rpm, then
you have a jetting problem. I'd hate to think that someone who owns a bike
that carburates cleanly from idle to redline would mess things up by trying
to cure a non-issue.
Ever hear a top-10 AMA superbike on the dyno? Lots of popping on
deceleration.
anyway, good luck with it. There's probably enough guys on this list that
there's someone out there with the exact same setup as you, running at the
same altitude. Maybe post your modifications and elevation.

Mods: bone stock, supertrapp IDS2 only. (aside from cruising
amenities put on by the PO--pegs,seat,grips)
Elevation: sea level, San Luis Obispo, CA.

It is lean.
That is all.

I'm not a carb expert and don't have a diagram in front of me, but if
memory serves, there is a circuit in the carb that supplies minimal
fuel charge for deceleration, and I believe there's a little hole in
front of the slide that makes this all work. That little guy, which I
believe is part of the idler circuit (I'm guessing here) could be
plugged. You might also try backing out your pilot jet, a mod that
many here have done to help sort out idle/surge/acceleration problems.
Does this make sense to anyone?
