name that symptom...

Hello, esteemed KLRistas, I just returned from a brief but intensive bash about upper Baja on my KLR, and notice a (dread) New Noise. I'd love to hear what you think it might be. It occurs at low speeds, usually 2nd and 3rd gear, going through 3000rpm--just a little over or a little under. Makes a single 'slap' or a 'tick' noise, then another maybe a few seconds later; I first thought I had a loose piece of thin plastic something flapping against the bodywork (think of one of those "garage sale" signs flapping front-to-back, that's what it sounded like to me). Looked around, and it doesn't seem to be any kind of loose bodywork or sticks or cactus or nothing like that. I haven't had much time to really look the thing over microclosely, but I can tell you with some certainty it's not bodywork. other clues: * I can't reproduce the noise without a load (rolling) on the engine. * I can't tell you *exactly* when it will happen, but as I said above, it does seem to be around 3000rpm, either accelerating up through or backing down through that engine speed. * I've only had the bike for about 5000 miles; the odometer shows 45, but it's reckoned (credibly, in my estimation) by the previous owner to be more like 25K currently. It's supposed to have had a valve adjust recently, last 6000 miles. Probably due for another soon. * I haven't checked inside the cases, or done anything but change the oil and put gas in. It's been ridden hard, and served well-- I bought it cheap, and it's already paid for itself, but I really like it, and would like to avoid a grenade situation. What I'm fearing somebody's going to say "doohickey." Help Me Obi-List... you're my only hope. Best Scott Squire

Scott, Doohickey? Not likely, but with your KLR's mileage, it would be best to remove both left side engine covers and the rotor & do a close inspection of the balancer chain & parts. My best guess? Your chain is intermittently hitting the outer lower rear portion of the front sprocket cover. Is the chain overly worn? Is the chain too loose? Is there any in & out play with the countershaft and/or sprocket? How is the master link (if you have one)? Any unusual wear marks on the swingarm or frame near the swingarm pivot? How do the front & rear chain guards look? Always check the easy things first. Remove the sprocket cover & see if anything changes, noise-wise. Don't wear baggy pants with the cover removed. Obi-wan-Professor A9 Federal Way, WA. [USA] ps: After your Baja trip, have you checked ALL your nuts & bolts for proper tightness? Are you missing your nuts? ++++++++++++++ Scott wrote: .Hello, esteemed KLRistas,
