Dana, at the risk of letting the whole world know of one of my favorite
campgrounds, it's Long Key State Park on Long Key. I have stayed at all 3
state parks in the keys and Long Key is the one for me.
Bahia Honda and John Pennycamp are both nice places, but I'll take LK.
John Pennycamp is geared more towards the dive crowd, and is usually
pretty crowded, it would be my last choice. Bahia Honda is nice, can't
say anything negative about it. Lots of sites, both on and off the water,
it would be my 2nd choice. Long Key, on the other hand, is small and
intimate. The only negative thing I could say about it, is that because
it is so small, it is very close to the roadway and you hear a lot of
traffic noise. This for me is a minor inconvenience. ALL sites are on the
water, can't say theres a bad site in the bunch. Nice nature trail at the
park. If you feel adventurous, you can hike to the north end of the key,
its about a 3 mile hike. Just make sure you get back before the tide
comes in, which brings in the bull sharks. Also, watch out for scorpions.
I know about this first hand, literally, but that's another story. Keep
your food safe from marauding raccoons, and if your lucky, you'll get a
good laugh watching the snakes trying to ambush the lizards. LK is about
15 miles south of Islamorada and 15 miles north of Marathon. Check it
out, its pretty nice.
Hope this helps, and have a great trip. Anthony

Planing on going to Key West in early June from Eastern PA. I will be
taking the Amtrak AutoTrain down to Orlando. Leave Washington DC at
4:00pm Saturday, arive Sunday morning in Orlando at 8:30. I really
need to save on the travel time.
Has anyone used the AutoTrain service?
Has anyone used the State campgrounds in the Keys?
Bahia Honda SP
John Pennycamp SP
Thanks,
