Can you believe the audacity of this guy? This has got to be a joke or something. Harley sucks. Always has, always will. Why, because they tell you what you can ride and they fix their prices. Cruisers, big fat, poor handling cruisers is all that Harley offers, besides a Buell that is a gamble on getting a decent one or not. Harley so much does not rule, they could not even manage to build a competitive Superbike for the AMA Superbike Series. Harley, pshaw. You couldn't give me one of those over priced boats. I'm probably being pulled into a joke of some kind, but when someone comes on the list, trashes a decent ride with some Frankenstein chopper ideas, and then slaps us in the face with Harley Rules, just gets my hair up. KLR riders are true motorcycle enthusiasts don't you think? We don't need no stinking image or a purchased life style-statement, no, just the 2 wheels that that can take you almost anywhere. We have enough self-worth to dare ride a bike that can only be appreciated by riding it. A cick magnet? hardly but try riding pillion on a V-Rod for any distance. it's a toy just a toy. I have really enjoyed this list, learned alot about my KLR, and even had a few laugh's. But I think that bike bashing is un called for. I ride a KLR and love it, but I also have a HARLEY 1200 Sportster that I love to get out and open up, I am a true enthusiast. Live to ride my motorcycles, not just my HARLEY or my KLR. I find it pretty small of people to bash a brand just because of someones else views on it. I understand what you're saying, and agree that ALL bikes are good - the worst day on a bike is better than the best day in a car. In my opinion, though, the recent Harley posts were very much tongue-in-cheek, and should not be considered as an attack on your ride. For many of us, me included, it's winter and there is no riding to be done for a while yet. (Although, it's getting more likely with the recent warm spell here in western Massachusetts!) There's nothing else to do but troll, and sit in the garage revving the bike and pretending the wind in our hair isn't coming from a fan, but is actual wind...

My recent brush with a Harley Poseur: Company dinner at a local restaurant. Company president and several east-coast engineer in town. One of the left-coast guys was tatood, long-hair, talked a lot about the Marines and how much he could drink, and once mentioned his Harley. Okay, being an avid long-time motorcyclist myself, I figured I could relate to that, even if I couldn't relate to anything else. So after the dinner as we were leaving, I asked him what kind of Harley he had. He proudly said, "I used to have a 78 FLH," and I think, 'Ooh, a Shovelhead, this guy probably is a real motorcyclist!', and he continues, "And now I have a new Lowrider." So I ask him, "Oh, is it an 88?", aiming to discuss the cam bearing failures. "No", he says, "it's a new bike, a 2001." "No," I say, "I mean, is it 88 cubic inches?" "Yeah," he says, "1340 ccs". (Which is 80ci, and *not* the twincam.) Last try, I said, "Oh, so you have the older evo, not the new twin-cam, then?" He replies with a very condescending tone, "No, it's a twin. A *Big Twin*." OK, so I agree that the guys who call themselves bikers and put 1 mile/day on their bikes aren't really motorcyclists. But so what? If it makes them happy to ride 1 mile/day and put lots of badges on their jacket, well, it's just more happy people on the road that are less likely to run me over by accident. And more used low-milage bikes on the market. Seems like a good deal to me.

OK, sure, maybe they confuse somebody's idea of what a motorcyclist is; but we're riding our bikes because we like riding them, not because we care what people think of it, so who cares? Cheers, -Lujo [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I think we can all agree that morons are in no danger of becoming extinct. And I will take poseur 1%-ers over the real thing any day, by a 10 to 1 ratio. But since we're busy pointing out H-D shortcomings while we're waiting for our first batch of replacement balancer levers (at least Harley eventually fixes defective designs on their own), Let me poke fun at the VR1000 race bike, inspiration for the V-Rod motor. Picotte put that bike on the pole a few times, he placed a few times, so it could be fast under the right conditions. But a race bike that doesn't win races is by simple definition a useless piece of sh*t. And now they've put the motor, a new standard for unreliability, into the bike that is Harley's hope for the future. This could be interesting. The only Harley that interests me, and it interests me greatly, is a 100hp flattracker. Sure it needs a new crank every 200 race miles, but so what? They look cool, they sound cool, and they are, unlike every other HD I've seen, faster than they are loud. A 1200 sportster with rearsets, Japanese switchgear and controls, Italian brakes/wheels/suspension, and a Metisse or Spondon frame would be the best American bike around! Devon Lujo Bauer wrote:

After taking the KLR down the left coast Dec 2000 on the Kenda 270's... glad it was over... love the 50/50 tire but not for long distances on pavement. Still put another one on but took the Connie last Dec. Howsabout the Continental twinduro (TCK..?) 80 that was being raved about last year? Any body running that and is it better than the 270 for pavement? Dan P Graham WA
