On page 34 of the April 2002 issue of MCN (Motorcycle Consumer News),
there is a discussion of potential problems with the KLR650's
"balancer adjuster spring," including the caveat that attempting
balancer chain adjustment when the spring is broken "can be
disastrous," which, they go on to say, might cause bending valves,
and irreparable damage to the engine case. Wow! Has anyone heard of
this problem before? What is the likelyhood of such a disaster?

A busted counter balancer adjuster can not damage your valves. It might do
disastrous things to the crankshaft but the valves are in the other end of
the engine. Damaged crankshafts and/or engine cases have been known to
happen from the balancer adjuster failure.
It is like the chicken and the egg, (which came first?). Is it the lever
adjuster breaking and letting the spring loose to be damaged later or is it
the spring that breaks and lets the adjuster loose? Either way you have no
way to tension your counter balancer chain. Running it loose will cause
noise first and then if the chain jumps off or gets the balancer out of time
with the crankshaft, you have big trouble.

I was told that the GST was refunded to American citizens on items that were
taken out of Canada. You present your receipt at the border.
