My biggest piece of advice is to remember this; When you are on the road, YOU ARE INVISIBLE, AND EVERYONE IS OUT TO KILL YOU! And, keep a smile on your face! You are doing what 95% of the population has no guts/intrest in doing. They are the ones missing out! Good luck, and have FUN! Brian A12 P.S. I have been riding on the road for 18 years, dirt even longer. Every year more cars get on the road, so the problems get worse. MSF is your best bet to learn good habits, so definitely don't miss out!

I don't know why, but these horror stories never happen to me. Situational awareness? My solid white helmet? Defensive riding? Beats the hell out of me... RM

Something that has helped me for over 100g safe miles (in addition to all the great things said about acting like they don't see you) is to be where they would be looking. Think about it for a second. Cagers look to 1 corner of a car. Ex: If they are in the middle or right hand lane of the freeway and want to move left they are looking for the right front headlight of the car. If you are on a two lane and the car is coming at you (or worse yet, waiting to turn left), they are looking for the left front headlight. BE WHERE THEY ARE LOOKING. The worst is the car waiting to pull out from a side street. It is hard to say what they are looking for so it never hurts to be EVERYWHERE or move about a bit in your lane. Bsetliff: A few things I have found useful: 1. As someone stated previously assume NOBODY sees you. 2. In multi-lane traffic avoid blind spots, adjust your speed so you are ahead of a car or stay behind a vehicle far enough so if they cut you off they will not hit you. 3. Use aux. brake lamps. I use the flashing Lifebrights and they help. Keep an eye on the rear view mirrors when you are stopped. Have an escape route if you sense the driver behind you does not see you. A good friend of mine was almost killed when he was rear ended at a stoplight. The impact launched him and his bike into oncoming intersection traffic. 4. Use the high beam during the day. 5. Keep two fingers on the front brake and the clutch when riding. The tenth of a second you save in reaction time could save your bacon. 6. As RM said situational awareness (SA) know what is going on around you and have an escape plan, this means using the mirrors and looking around 7. Get a loud horn. The stocker if good for waking up bugs 10ft in front of the headlight, but not very effective for brain dead, cell phone using, cagers driving a 2 ton projectile while listening to music at 110 decibles.
