Hey, gang. I have a question for you heated-grip experts. I put on a pair on my bike that I got from Fred. Took 12 gauge (I think) wire from battery positive and negative up to a little box on the handlebars, fed it through a 15-amp relay powered by the city light circuit, and then through the provided resistor and toggle switch. Problem is, I don't get very much heat. After a while, say 5-6 minutes, the right grip will get appreciably warm, though not really warm enough to make that much of a difference through gloves. The left grip, on the other hand barely gets warm enough that I'd notice it's not stone cold. Now I realize that the left grip element is for all practical purposes heating the handlebars, but given that people on this list have mentioned their grips being too hot, this seems ridiculous! I thought that perhaps I hadn't run thick enough wire from the battery, but last night I tried my Eclipse vest for the first time (plugged into a BMW plug mounted in the same box as the switch for the grips), and with 27 degrees outside that was almost instantly as toasty as I'd wish for. So what gives? Any ideas? Thanks! -Lujo P.S. Please spare me the heated grips vs heated gloves I-told-you-sos. I admit that I'm now convinced that heated gloves are better than heated grips. Where did you attach your ground wire? If this wire is attached to the front forks or triple clamps, I believe that your current would have to go through the steering bearings to get to the frame ground. This would not be a good thing. Also check to see that you have followed the instructions with the grip heaters so that you have the heating elements wired properly. I don't remember if they are supposed to be wired in parallel or in series. You might have to try your heaters without the relay to see if there is a resistance there.
