better than painting? i want my yellow klr!

All, I'm about to buy my first KLR as my 2nd bike (after a Suzuki GS500) and the only thing that really bugged me was my overwhelming preference for a Yellow bike. Call me weird, but yellow bikes are inherently beautiful. I also bend towards the utilitarian, so had I been able to find a yellow KLR I would buy it on the spot. Sadly there is no such monster. Suzuki makes the DR650SE in yellow, but that bike doesn't have nearly the potential that I see in the KLR. Browsing this page about the IMS Valdez tank insta llation(http://www.finishlinewest.com/ims_install.htm) I looked around and discovered that this guy not only changed the color of his bike, but did so in a very durable fashion. He took all the plastic bits off plus the back grab bar and had it coated with the same material as sprayed-in bedliners. Pictures here: http://www.finishlinewest.com/line-x_coatings.htm This gave me the idea of getting that done, and having it done in yellow. Both durable and the right color. Thus I ask, have any listers had this kind of sprayed on treatment done to anything? Colors? I'm going to call my local Line-X shop and see what they can do. Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg, even if it's $300 I could rationalize it, if it's really as nice as the FinishlineWest guy implies. I imagine I would have the body parts done, leave the grab bar alone, and have a disc brake cover done as well. Any other parts that would do well for such a coating? I'd get new fork booties and replace the brush/wind guards on the handlebars completely with a yellow-black Acerbis or the like. I'd like to hear the thoughts of the owners here. Does this seem rational? Practical? Expensive? :) - Paul in Tucson

Hey Paul I too am trying to find a way to change color. Your idea sounds good to me. But wouldnt the finish be kinda rough! lots a dirt and gunk might stick to that. Not to mention it would wear holes in all your pants right by the knee. If you do it, i wanna see. Im in Tucson also. We have a few listers here in town. --- bpm31337 wrote:

Paul, Welcome to the list. I recall Andy Cohen saying that the Line-X added a significant amount of weight to the bike. I think the KLR is heavy enough and I personally would not do it, but one of the neat things about KLR riders is the wide variety of experimentation that they do. A group of KLRs get together and you won't find any two of them equipped the same. I would think you can get it painted by a body shop for cheaper than the Line-X. -Bryan A12 Tucson

I like yellow bikes too. I have a yellow Magna that gets plenty of attention when it's out and about. Look into having it done with bed liner spray. It is duarble, has a funky texture and comes in all kinds of colors. Beware that it will add about 10-15 lbs to your bike. Gino
