I am making a shoplist of things to get for the KLR.
While flipping thru the catalog I came across
the grip section and began to wonder if an after
market grip would be any better than the current stocker.
We haven't discussed grips much on the list except
for the plug in heaters types. The catalog has 5-6 pages
of grips.
So What is the feedback on the after market Grips?

I have a set of grips I got from Fred, I think they are called Pro-grip
gel grips. They are much more comfortable than the stock grips and seem
to absorb more vibration as well.
I installed them using safety wire instead of grip glue, the grips have
safety-wire grooves molded into them. This works great, and you can
remove and reinstall them easily if necessary.

Craig - I bought some gel grips at Walmart and universal bar ends
from the dealer. I like them both. The grips are much more
comfortable and the bar ends allow me to use an o-ring for a friction
cruise control.
Enjoy

Yep - in the bicycle department. They are the same size and work
great.

I happened to be in a Walmart last night and looked in the bike area,
did'nt see any grips, but its winter in Illinios also... do seem to
remember seeing bike grips by the BMX bikes and wondered if they
would fit the KLR's bars. Some were kinda cool looking.
Jury is still out on grips for me, considered some nice Gel type, but
prob. will wait until the OEM's get chewed up.

It surprises me that bicycle grips would work on both sides because
the throttle side requires a larger inside diameter than the clutch
side.

tool tube - how to affix?

Yup, me too. Except my tool tube IS my highway pegs. The tube sits nicely
on top of the "legs" of the U-bolt that holds the bash plate to the frame
tube, and the ss hose clamps (Home Depot) go around the tube and through
the holes in the bash plate. Really a great system, and I use it to carry
a flare, wire, hose and lighters, making it truly a multi-purpose add-on.
