a15 oil hog
I did a 250 mile trip on Friday. I checked the oil before I left, it
was almost to the top line of the sight glass. When I checked it
today, it barely registered to the bottom line of the glass. I've
only got 5,000 miles on this bike, and it gets serviced regularly, no
signs of an oil leak. Are these things notorious for eating oil?

Maybe your bike was leaned more to the right side when you checked on
the way out or leaned too far to the left when checking on the way in.
???? Just a guess
Maybe thats why the sight glass oil level indicator is such
a "touchy" topic to some on this list ?
I would of course pay attention to the level, I have had a small
import truck now about 15 or 16 years and about 189k miles, whenever
its time for a oil change the level will drop 1/2 ~ 3/4 qt, for no
reason I can explain. Almost like its telling me to change it.
Just hope my A15 keeps an eye-full all the time.

You could have a ring stuck in it's groove, Had this happen to my Datsun from to rich of fuel mixture, raw fuel that doesn't burn off can cause carbon in the combustion chamber and ring grooves causing them to stick, most of this kinda problem happens during warmup from excessive use of the choke. Do you know if the bikes been rejeted, maybe a little to rich? A compression test should tell if your rings are ok. I don't know what the comp pression is for the klr, maybe someone here at the site does. Dan

I found that any oil lighter than 20w-50 (ie.. 10-40, 5-30, 5-50 etc)
will get consumed faster. Also canyon running will eat more oil. This
probably comes from using the engine as a brake. With the throttle
close the piston needs to suck air from somewhere so it pulls it from
the crankcase and past the valve stems (my guess) and takes some oil
with it. the heavier 20-50 helps prevent this.

Yeah, I've rejetted it with K&N stage 1, K&N oil filter and the Laser
Pro Duro exhaust. Interesting comment about warmup and excessive
choke use. I full choke it to start it, then about choke for 3 or 4
minutes, then no choke for a few more minutes. It does smoke a bit on
start-up ever since I rejetted, but not an outrageous amount.
An earlier post mentioned it eating oil at speed, which in this case,
most of that ride was freeway miles at 80+.
