thermostat replacement

I was planning on replacing the thermostat in my KLR due to the fact that it is running too cool. Also after a very long warm-up the temperature swings wildly depending on if the bike is stoppped and outside temp. This leads me to believe that the thermostat is stuck open and not regulating the temp like it should. The first question I have is, what is the proper sealant to use on the housing? According to the microfiche, there is no gasket or seal indicated and the parts counterman said to just use case sealant. Second, is there a suitable aftermarket replacement for the thermostat? $29 for the factory unit seems a bit pricey. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Mark
