well the mystery "ginger" invention has finally been revealed (a battery
powered scotter of two opposed wheels- with top speed of 12 mph). i predict
it will go nowhere because first of all its no improvement over a bicycle-
2nd, its no improvement over a very efficient battery or gas/motorized
scooter that could be built. 3rd- there's no infrastructure for it to travel
on! heck we have no bicycle paths in this country and other forms of
scooters are actually outlawed on sidewalks!

Below is a pretty good representation of how most techno geeks view the world. Quoted from a software engineer after his recent
visit to New York. Admittedly, it sounds great. But what do you think the reality is behind this image? About the guy playing the sax
under the bridge? Or the people with the sail boat?
"...people were sailing little radio control sailboats around the pond, musicians were playing flutes and saxe's under
the shade of the many trees, some guy was playing the sax under an old stone overpass, the echo creating a cool effect... the scene
quite literally could have been from Gene Roddenberry's incredibly optimistic future as portrayed in Star Trek: The Earth so small
that everyone was on the same side, in an idillyc setting together, with technology only allowing us to live our lives however we
wanted, not interfering or domintaing at all. It was really a glimpse of a utopia that I have though back on most every day for the
last few months. "
The idea of riding a perfect little scooter around perfectly maintained streets devoid of nasty cars on a perfect sunny day sounds
wonderful. But there are too many realities to overcome for this to be viable in the near future. #1. What would all of the people
who actually paid to have those streets built, think of not being able to drive on them? Techno geeks hate reality. (I know, I'm a
recovering one)

I think Segway would be excellent for mail carriers in areas that make it
easy to move around on. Also downtown messenger services, warehouse
supervisors, store clerks, etc. could use it. I see "its" biggest threat
being to the golf cart industry. I know they already have a deal with the
post office. Other than that, unless they can get the price of one down to
a $1000.00, I see it as nothing more than a executive's toy. Can you say
Sharper Image catalog.
Hopefully the technology it uses can have other applications that will have
more impact on the real world. No doubt, Kamen's vision for his invention
far outstrips reality.

The top speed is 12 mph and the battery is supposed to last 17
miles. I'm far from being in perfect physical condition but I can
ride a bicycle 17 miles at 12 mph. Even a little further. 12 mph
is slow pace on a bike. It's for those of us who need a motorized
cart to shop, and, or, those of us who have the money for expensive
novelties. Sudo training wheels for the balance impaired. Some
might say it's just another invention to make our society a bit
fatter. It's certainly not revolutionary by any means.

No doubt there are some great possibilities. It will be interesting to
see the changes that occur over the next year to the design.

One business idea for an entrepreneur minded individual.
Set up rental stands in pedestrian tourist areas and/or amusement parks of major citys.

Supply it with a XR650R motor and get back to me. Better yet, supply
it with the 650 motor and Ginger from Gilligan's Island (How she
looked back then of course) and I'll buy.

Agreed and I had rather thought of the various catalouges from Sharpers
Image to Brookstone that would carry it.

I wonder what potential such a fine-tuned balancing mechanism might have in
terms of improved prosthetics, car and aircraft safety, and perhaps
motorcycle applications as well (balance and ABS merged with a unique
traction control?). Hmm..

I have visions of full contact Segway Ball! Imagine a 300lb linemen coming at you, or going out for a pass! Maybe modified Segway racing... If they really want to make this the lazy mans dream vehicle, it should be designed so that one only needs to flex a butt cheek in a certain way to move in various directions, and breaking wind increases speed! Now imagine the 300lb lineman coming at you!!
