just rode my new 02klr home and within 20 miles the temp guage was in
the red I stoped checked the coolant it was full , reservoir was
also full , when i took the rad cap off it did not gush out, it
was not boiling, but the coolant was definatly hot, after shutting it
off the fan continued for about a minute ,what does this mean, is
the guage unaccurate, it was running very near the red even on the
freeway at 60mph. any suggestions ,, where does your temp guage
run normally???????

My '01 does not run hot - at least according to the guage. In fact, it
rarely gets halfway on the guage and I ride it mostly on the highways as my
daily commuter - wide open in the morning before the traffic - barely
crawling in the afternoon in rush hour traffic.

new klr got hot first ride????

That is not normal. My 2002 very seldom runs past the middle of the
meter. I even left mine idling for 15 minutes one time (stupid move)
and it still wasn't past the middle when I remembered and ran out to
shut it off. Call the dealer and tell them you are concerned because it
ran really hot on the way home and that you talked to several other
KLR650 riders and they all said it was not right. Do not tell them you
knowingly drove it while it was in the red. If they ask you to bring it
back in, I'd tell them you would prefer that they come pick it. I'm
sorry you're having this problem. They really are great machines. But
like any machine, they can have problems right out of the box. Please
keep us informed on what you find out.
Good luck,

One more thing. Take it for a spin around town and listen for the
cooling fan to kick on and off. If it gets too hot pull over and let it
cool down. Don't drive it in the redline. If you don't hear the fan
running, then check the wiring to make sure it's plugged in. If you are
facing the motorcycle the fan is on the right, the wires and the plug
come out of the left side of the fan.

It means that you need to call the dealer to get the bike picked up and
any warranty work done.

My waterpump impeller shaft sheared at 600 miles on my A15. Or your temp
gauge could be faulty.
Like Mr. T says, have the dealer pick it up and get 'er fixed under warranty!

The fan on my '02 also runs a minute after I shut it off (sorry I overlooked that reference in your post), I would assume that is
normal. The high temp is not.

new klr250 owner, carb question.

Congratulations!
I also picked up a used 250 this summer. 600 miles `98. $1,500.00 bucks!
I love motivated sellers. I am, however, dealing with a few relatively
major problems due to the bike not being used as it sat in the PO's garage.
>And posting my first message to this discussion group.
There aren't a whole lot of Calf (baby kaw?) owners here. But, post away if
you have any questions.
If you plan on doing your own wrenching, I suggest you test your stock tool
kit (if the PO sold it to you with the bike) to see if the spark plug
removal socket works. I'm in the process of figuring a way to get my plug
out and so far haven't had any luck. The head doesn't give enough clearance
for any of my existing metric tools.
Today I did stop by a small machine shop to have my junk NAPA deep well
12-point sockets turned down to about half their original diameter. I'm
having the 16mm, 17mm, and 18mm ones processed.
Kawasaki does sell a special $50.00 tool to remove the plug, but the charge
from the machine shop is quite a bit cheaper. Also, the Kaw tool is a tee
handle unit. The turned down sockets will allow the use of a torque wrench
for installing the plug.
Might I also suggest that the KLR250 owners subscribed to the KLR650 list
include the string "KLR250" in the subject matter of their posts. This will
allow easy filtering to an exclusive KLR250 folder on your email client. It
will also make processing the volume of total KLR posts for relevant
information a simpler task. Much like the already existing "NKLR"
convention for non-KLR content.
---------
While I'm taking the time to pulling the bike's head, I thought I'd put some
effort into really de-gunk the carb. I'd like to dip the body for a day or
two to clear the varnish in the smaller passages of the unit. I tried to
remove the plastic fuel feel tube that is pressed into the metal of the carb
with a small pair of Channel locks. Obviously, I didn't want to destroy the
fitting. Has anyone had success in removing *all* the plastic on the carb
before dipping? How did you remove the plastic fuel inlet fitting? Is it
threaded or just pressed in?
Thanks,
