how to break in

First, you do not want to break it!! More properly is to "wear" it in. My 2 cents (SHORT version): Always let it warm up prior to riding (needle on temp gauge has moved; or warm to touch). Ride reasonably until engine temps have stabilized. Start with a certain self-induced RPM maximum (say 2500 or so) and do not exceed for say 500 miles. Then increase the RPM max a few hundred for the next 1000 miles or so. Follow this logic till you are using most of the RPMs available. (Redline is not a good place for your motor to live for long periods of time.) Once you get to the 1500 - 2000 mile mark, then visit higher end of the RPMs (nearer to redline as your mileage increases) for only 10 seconds or so. After the 10 seconds then close the throttle and let the engine braking slow the beast down significantly. Acceleration / deceleration wears in different surfaces in the gears etc. and this makes for a smooth running engine and less friction which contributes to a long life. Bottom line: take your time; talk to her often; listen to what she says. (Kinda like a women!) For a more detailed explanation see the BMW site, under airheads. May take a while but she will thank you for it. It goes without saying to follow maintenance schedules too.
