52 tooth rear sprocket

Hello fellow listers.
I was at a local Kawasaki dealer yesterday buying some DOT knobbies for the
KLR. I also ordered a new 14T front sprocket to replace an old one. The
next part surprised me. I asked for a 45T rear sprocket just as I have used
in the past. The parts guy mentioned that he can order rear sprockets for
the KLR from 43T (stock) all the way up to 52T !!! At first I was excited
and placed an order for the 52T along with the above mentioned parts.
Has anyone tried mounting a rear sprocket of this size (or anything larger
than a 45) on a KLR650? If so, is there enough chain adjustment to use the
stock chain size? Any information/advice on this is greatly appreciated.

I can get sprockets all the way up to about 70 teeth on the rear of a KLR.
The problem is that these sprockets are made out of aluminum. Aluminum
sprockets wear out faster than steel ones. They are lighter but on a KLR
that is not much of a factor. Going up to a 52T sprocket is a very big
jump. It would be like dropping down to a 12T on the front. Great if you
are pulling out tree stumps but your top speed will be dropped to around
50-60 mph. Did you check to see if you are getting a steel rear sprocket or
an aluminum one? You definitely won't be able to use the stock chain. You
will have to add at least 9 links to your chain.

I can imagine you will have the wheelie king from the ages, but on the other
hand where did the top end go with something like this? You'll be totally
revved out by around 60mph won't you? On the other hand, you could probably
drag a tank up a mountain!

http://www.sprocketspecialists.com can get some interesting rear sprockets
for the KLR. I don't know if they are all steel or not. Beware that the
info on chain length on their site is wrong...

how to break in

Im going to pickup my new klr tonite, was wondering how you all
would reccomend to break it in the manual says nothing over
4000rpm for the first 500 miles.
what mods would be considered must do?
Ill be riding it probably 70% street and the rest dirt
