small bike, big fun, now a question

I have been thinking of getting a KLR for several months now. I just went out dirt riding with my brother and I borrowed my nephew's bike. It is a little 125 dirt bike that weighs 100 lbs less than I do. Man, that was a hoot. Now I am questioning if I want a KLR 650 or a strictly dirt bike. I am 6'3"; 300 lbs and the little bike will get old very fast. How many of you own a KLR AND something for dirt only? I worry that the KRL will not be as fun (or forgiving) in the very sandy dirt and trails we saw this weekend. Perhaps a nice 350 or 400 dirt bike would be best. Then I remember I want to take the bike to work when my Jeep needs repair or be able to take the bike to the desert and not have to worry about a trailer on my short wheelbase Jeep. I don't know. Anyone have any advice?

With a few suspension mods and the right tires, you can ride the KLR in
sand no problem. Especially someone your size. I did the Sunday loop of
the Meteor DS ride in the South Jersey sand, with less than optimal
tires for the soft stuff, for 80 miles. I'm 5'7" and 160. If I can
manage that bike in sand I'm sure you'll have no problem. I've ridden my
buddy's DRZ-400S, and yes it's a much better dirt bike but he will
trailer the thing if the dirt is more than 50mi away.

you can't have it all, man. the klr is a great all-around bike (arguably
the best, certainly for its cost), but you can't beat a light bike for
serious dirt. a 350 or 400 is definitely a reasonable compromise if your
street trips will not be too long.

Dear Confused:
What you find when you get into anything in an extreme way is that you end up
getting every tool for every specific job. No bike is good in every
situation. If you can't afford to have a fleet of bikes for various
applications, you buy a KLR650 and count your blessings.

Lube clutch cable? Mine was pretty dry and catchy.
Move license plate up before the rear tire knocks it off.
Do you believe in Slime? If so, get some into the tubes ASAP. This stuff
saved my weekend.
