oil filter/tires

I had the oil changed at ~500 miles and I changed it myself at 1200 miles and I was disappointed in how chinsy the Kawasaki oil filter was (the filter material seemed pretty fragile). What kind of filters are most people using? Also rear tire already looks bad (1800 miles) anyone using D604's or similar tires? Thanks Jeff
