There are no steals out there, unless you're local to Chaparral. Every
place that has a good price charges too much S&H and vice-versa. Dennis
Kirk does free shipping on orders over $100 but their prices are kinda
high on tires. Fred is fair on shipping but his prices are also high.
Many retailers charge tax on orders from CA residents, so that complicates
matters even further for those of us [un]fortunate enough to live in the
land of fruitcakes and nutjobs.
Someone on this list got Dennis Kirk to price-match MAW, so that might
help a little. Also, MAW sometimes does these one day sales with $5
shipping on tires and free shipping on nearly everything else.. They
still charge the $4.95 handling fee, though. This is no big deal on a
$130 BMW tire but it really adds up on a $25 Kenda.
Good luck. It sucks being thrifty.

The local mega dealer matches any mail order price but....you have to ask
and they make a point of not advertising this fact. Bet other dealerships
around the USA/Canuckland do the same.

No, it's a good thing. Don't you remember the Boy Scout Code (or
whatever it was)? Thrifty, cheerful, obedient, brave, et cetera...
That's why I buy my KLR's tires from the cycle shop up the street.
They appreciate my giving them the business, and I have some
credibility there if I ever need special attention or service, since
I have been known to spend money there on tires.
It's not like it's a lot of money or anything. Sometimes saving a
couple of dollars costs you in the long run, like when you might need
a favor from the local cycle shop and two weeks prior you were
dissin' em for their tire prices. They may not wish to help you out;
they certainly are under no obligation to do that.
Bill
doesn't know the Boy Scout Code, I was a Sea Scout (way more fun)

I am a retailer of motorcycle parts. I do not charge more than retail and I
am not a discount store. If you want to order parts from me I charge a fair
price and will be up front with you about expected delivery and offer you as
much free advice as you can take. If you want to play games with discount
stores you take your chances on getting the correct parts or the parts you
actually need and not the parts you think you want. There have been more
than a few times that someone has ordered parts from me and after talking
over there order find out that they don't really need what they thought they
did. So I guess what you think is a high price is more than fair from
someone else.

I would like to put in a little plug for Fred, not that he really
needs it. I have only ordered from him once, but will be ordering
again soon. When I called he not only knew exactly what I was talking
about, he had the OEM part in stock. He told me he would run to the
post office that afternoon (a Saturday!)to get my order out! I had
already called 6 "local" Kawasaki dealers and none had the part in
stock or seemed particularly intersted in ordering it. I don't think
Fred has ever claimed to be a discounter, but his prices are fair and
his service and knowledge are excellent. Sure you can save a few
bucks on some items, but is it worth it? How many discounters (or
dealers for that matter) know or care anything about our particular
bikes?

Which is precisely why it's good that the KLR community has a choice.
For people who need the correct part on-time and with very good support,
you are definitely The Man. Others do not need (or are not willing to pay
for) this level of service, and there are plenty of reputable retailers
with aggressive prices that cater to this crowd.

Gotta say good things about Fred, here. I haven't bought tires from
him, but HAVE bought a ton of other stuff from him. Been to his shop,
had dinner with him, have gotten advice on local trails from him,
have gotten parts and maintenance advice from him.
His prices, even if not the lowest in the land, are quite fair, and
his service is excellent. He's a regular guy doing something he
loves, making a living helping us out; not a big corporation that
doesn't give a shit if you ever buy anything again. Almost all of the
aftermarket stuff on my KLR has come from Fred's place (except tires;
I buy them locally. ;

Uh uh, Boy Scouts don't do that kind of stuff. That is why when I
was fourteen I joined the Sea Scouts. We had fun like that. We
would beach our boat on the Sacramento River right downstream a
hundred yards or so from the yacht club parties (they all meet up and
party) and when they fell asleep, usually pretty early in the summer
twilight in the Central Valley, we would slip over to where their
picnic tables were set up on the beach and strip them of lots of good
stuff...I remember whole hams, huge half-gallons of Taqueray Gin and
Jim Beam whiskey....and we would load up our sea bags with all the
booty. We were Pirates!

www.chapparal.com seems to have the best prices on Kenda tires.
Remember to add $8 shipping per tire.
