In my opinion, the best deal out there for a functional useful jacket that will last forever is either the leather Firstgear Kilimanjaro or the Hein Gericke Dakar. If you look for a used Dakar or Kilimanjaro, and you should follow the IBMWR classifieds, you'll end up with the best thing you ever spent 200 bucks on. You can still buy the Dakars new, they might be about $350 from a mail order discounter. The Firstgear is preferable due to the Thermoneck and the pocket design, not to mention the sleeve vents. Bill I have all three.

I'm glad you asked. I just received the latest First Gear flyer and they are making a bunch of changes for next year. Believe it or not the Killimanjaro can now be had in different colors. The new colors for the Killimanjaro in 2002 will be gray/black, blue/black, red/black and yellow/black. The price hasn't changed from last year too. There will be some new sharp jackets coming out from First Gear next year as well. The Vortex is nice looking with armor in a medium length jacket. Also check out the Rev-X jacket. Lots of armor and many colors to chose from. The Voyger will be competing with the Killimanjaro for a rugged 3/4 length jacket. It comes in colors and has a built in fanny pack. The Kenya hasn't changed from last year. The Trekker jacket looks good too. The women's Pearl and the man's Granite jackets look great for a lighter weight jacket. First Gear has about 16 pair of different gloves for next year. I don't believe their website has been updated with these new additions but you can check out the First Gear web site at: http://www.intersportfashions.com/ If anyone is interested in a First Gear jacket, I will be taking off 10% until the end of the year. I have the Kilimandjaro jacket and the pants that match up with it. I've been VERY happy with it, at least once I figured out after the first days ownership that the inside liner is also the waterproof layer. Ever seen how fast a work uniform can get drenched on the way to work? Aside from that first mistake I love everything else about the jacket/pants combo. I do plan to put in some better arm/knee/shoulder armour which will be easy since it is already set up to take it.
