saturday klr ride, i need a motor
All,
Saturday AM came waaay too early, and I knew the task
ahead would be pretty ugly...
Wake up and ride the KLR down to The Springs in near
freezing tempetures on the KLR. Once the ride to the
springs was complted the rest of the day would be a
hoot. So I woke, put on the warm clothes, warm
gloves, warm socks, etc...
So I left the house bundled up and headed down to The
Springs, feezing all the way (My Slave.errr.brother
was at the Gerbing open house buying me a nice warm
gerbing jacket.) Got to The Springs, met with Ned and
Tom and loaded the My KLR to join Tom's KLX and Neds
Thunderpig on the trailer and off to Villa Grove for
some exploring.
We left villa grove for the Bonanza area to do some
goofing around on the fire roads there. Heading up
one of the hills we were doing fine, hitting the frost
heaves (mogul sized dirt piles to prevent water from
running all the way down the trail) and riding out the
front end. (just a little whack on the throttle to
lift the front wheel at the top of the frost heave)
so anyways I'm making my way up the hill, having some
fun, when WHACK, both feet off the pegs bike sliding
side to side whilst I get things under control. Both
feet back on the pegs, I grab the next stop I can to
settle things down in the groin area (ever hit the top
bar on your ten speed? you know what I mean then)
and Ned comes up yelling, "shut off the motor!" I kill
the engine, and look back down the trail. Oil slick.
The oil slick leads to a broken rock. (Yes, broken
rock) I quick check under the motor shows that my
Moose Bashplate has a hole in it, that also opened the
engine case, freeing it of oil. Great.
Ned and Tom went into disaster mode, Tom heading back
for the truck, Ned and I coasting down the hill.
KLR's jump better with no oil and the engine not
running. I didn't want to slow down and loose
momentum, so I jumped the front heaves on the way down
too.
. Once we reached level ground Ned towed me
back towards Villa Grove to throw the bike up on the
trailer.
Ned and Tom I'd like you both to know that I really
appreciate all of the help you guys gave me, and I am
sorry we had to turn around so quickly after starting
out... I couldn't ask for better riding partners.
I'll be taking the motor out soon, and taking pictures
of the holes in the motor and in the bashplate.
Take Care!
