Hi, I'm about to buy a KLR 650, 1996 model, blue and white, with 46,782 kms on the clock. I've always ridden road bikes and feel the need for a change. I've had no road/trail or trailbike experience but after taking the 650 for a ride-- what a hoot! I'm looking forward to getting one on the road and learning the new art of road/trail riding. I know it's not a full-on trail bike but i want something that will tour and be moderately good off road. It seems to fit the bill. I'm only 5' 7" but feel comfortable with the bike and love the extra vision you get being up high in the saddle. I've already accessed the KLR 650 website but thought I would ask list members if there's anything to look out for with this year bike. It seems in good nick, has a Staintune pipe and no obvious problems. Handling seems good. There a dent in the outside edge of the Staintune but the bike itself seems straight. A couple of initial questions: Is the mileage OK for this type of bike (it seems genuine)? Is there a small screen available that will give a bit of wind protection but won't affect handling -- I find that bar-mounted screens often cause problems. I'd appreciate all and any comments of any sort in the next couple of days, as I need to decide soon whether to buy this one. Finally to the list manager -- thank you for a well constructed list. Regards, Jack

Catholic grade-school kids in Northern Ireland have to worry about molotov cocktails being thrown at them by Protestants. Some trade-off.
