newbie klr rider

hello all...
New KLR rider here (2000 Klr bone stock). I have been rideing
it for 3 weeks and have a few questions for those in the know.
1. oil.(yes i have noticed that oil is a intresting subject) I am
looking at doing oil change (the klr has 5800 km on it) and I am
thinking going to Mobil 1 15w50 heavy duty Synthetic Oil (I have
read posts saying Mobil 1 is a good oil but not what weight) any
good words or bad words for this oil? All other mobil 1 oils here
are the Tri Synthetic type and I have heard bad things about them.
2. Bike drop. as a full sized guy 6 foot 3 240 lbs my klr drops
quite a bit when I get on. is this normal? other than spending
large cash to buy a new rear spring and shock is there a way to fix
or improve this?
3. Bike Fairing. My front fairing and side panels appear to be
discoloring in a few spots, I have been told this is normal and is
caused by stress on the plastic. is there anything I can do to
reduce this?
4. Off Road. How bad a road is too bad a road/trail? I am new to
bikeing offroad, my only bike experiance is 2 years with a 83
interceptor, 1 year with a 84 sabre and 6 months on a hardtail
hardly (honda motor build on a hardtail frame). anyway at what
point is it time to turn back? is road rock about 8 inches to 1 1/4
foot (like a stream bed) too much for the bike?
5. what should I put on the bike for an emergency? I have the stock
tools and will be buying spare tubes and a tube repair kit. what
else should be brought along for solo trail trips?
6. fuel mileage. how far can i expect to go on bush roads on a full
tank? I live 10 mins away from a logging road the goes 40 or 50
miles north or me and has an untold number or side roads that go 20
or 30 miles before branching orr again to even more roads. most are
old closed roads that are not in use and have degraded to almost
unuseable tracks. I have a urge go just a little farther up this or
that trail just to see where it goes and am worried I will end up
pushing my bike back home one day.
7. GPS. on my last trip I spent four hours following one trail to
the next just looking around, stoping everynow and then to check
things out when I finally found the end the track there was a great
view, I looked abound a bit and enjoyed the fruits or D-P bikes
hoped on my bike a started back. at the fourth turn I could not
remember which of three trails got me to where I was. thanks to a
recent rain and no other traffic I was able to pick my way back if
the last week had not been a little wet i might still be up there.
any good GPS suggetions? I would like to copy my trails to my
computer so i can one day map the whole area for trails and view
pionts.
8. for those in canada, what are the ways to legaly transport rifles on
a bike? after meeting a few bears in the bush and just not
thinking a bear scare is not loud enough I have always packed a 12G
pump in my truck. when going into the bush on a bike i am just not
sure how to pack it to the bush with out the police harassing me or
around the bush so it is usefull.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
sorry for all the questions but I have been saving them up. and the
archives dont seem to be working for me right now...
Legion.
