I have been reading this group off and on for several months and have done some reasearch on the KLR on the internet. I had previously found a web page with a section devoted to things new owners should do to their machines. The writer said he was tired of answering the same questions over and over, so he wrote this page.I am currently unable to find that site. I thought I had accessed the page from the DSN page but cannot find it now. Anyone know what I am referring to and where I can find it? Yesterday I purchased a 2000 KLR650 with 3500 miles. I have been riding for 33 years and currently also own a 1999 Honda XR650L which I love and will hate to part with (maybe I won't ). I bought the KLR because it looks like it will be more comfortable to ride 2 up with my wife and more comfortable on the highway. Really like that 6 gallon gas tank! My immediate question is how do I adjust the rear suspension preload. I weigh in excess of 200 lbs and will be riding 2 up also. The preload is set on 1. I see the notches in the adjusting ring, but what sort of spanner will work on it? There doesn't seem to be much room to work any tool. Thanks for any help! Tom

The preload adjustment is a 12mm bolt out of the top side part of the shock. Rotating this clockwise will increase the preload. You will feel the detents and at the last setting it will SNAP back to the start. The rebound adjustment is behind a black plastic cover on the bottom of the shock. It almost sounds like you have an after market shock on the back. The stock shock adjusts by a bolt head easily seen and accessed from the side stand side of the bike. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa
