Interesting articles. I put the Prestone extended life in my KLR and cars. Neither article addressed if using distilled water was preferable to tap water though. I did use distilled in my KLR per the service manual and tap water in the autos. Brad

coolant articles - nklr

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use distilled water for coolant systems! A gallon costs maybe $1.50 ? ? ? Even a small amount of mineral content in tap water can cause scaling of radiator core surfaces and abrasion of water pump parts. There is no reason NOT to use distilled since the cost is so low - the argument of 'how much better it is' is really not the point. This is a 'no brainer' in my book. I use 'DexCool' type (orange) extended life, after draining the 'normal' (green) coolant from my A7 I flushed with Prestone '10 minute flush' and then refilled, ran warm, and drained system with straight distilled water THREE TIMES (this is important!) to clean all residue out before filling with the extended life mixture. Now I intend to drain and fill fresh mixture every year anyway - should eliminate the need to flush from now on, at least until many many many miles are on the bike. Please note that the first time you drain the 'regular' coolant out you should flush the system before filling with extended life, otherwise you will leave all the 'crud' in the system and defeat the point of the extended life coolant. Even if the bike is still new there will be containants and trace elements from the factory coolant to get rid of - even ppm levels can defeat the purpose of using the new extended life stuff. Besides, the orange stuff looks cool in the overflow tank . . .

I would be a very poor selection for the pole position. I think the gentleman that started planning this thing, in the first place, may be the best prepared for this kind of a challenge. I know I'm not. I'm still learning how to get around the Austin area, and I still get lost. (Damn maps). ;-) Jim KLR650Pilot
