klr lean surge

Post by nativvtr@juno.com » Thu Jul 12, 2001 4:29 pm

Hi- Les Griffith here. I own and ride a '93 KLR 650. I have had, and am having problems with the "lean surge" that I have heard so much about. I drove my local Kawi dealer almost to drink last year, before finally coming across this great forum !! I feel somewhat humbled to learn that most of what I was being told by a very sympathetic tech at the dealership was TRUE !! The problem was so bad that I was riding home one night (last year) at highway speeds (65 +/-) and she was bucking so bad I thought I was running out of gas.. In fact , that is the best way to describe it- its that same feel you get just before having to switch over to "reserve" on the tank. I finally did waht the dealer recommended, and installed the K&N jet kit, as well as a K&N air filter. The high speed surge went immediately away! thats the good news. The bad news is that it is still present at med throttle postitions, in virtually any gear. It is mainly present and indicated at constant throttle positions. If I wonk on the throttle, she pulls flawlessy. This is a strong indication to me that it is (obviously) a mid-range problem only. here's the $24 question - can anyone recommend a jet/needle combo that they have used with this set-up, and that has worked for them ?! I must also add that I have installed a Big Gun exhaust, quiet series version. That really did help the low-end grunt, I must say !! I have seen much discussion about the "lean surge", and that a "competent tech" should be able to adjust it out. I have yet to be able to do so. I figure the jetting itself is OK, as full-throttle applications are fine. Should i be addressing the needle only? Are there other needles available, or can I only alter the height via the clip ? I have minitored the plug, and I am NOT running lean - it looks very good. it was DEFINITELY lean before I made any changes. This is a known condition, I gather, in that the manufacturers jet lean to pass emissions. Oh yeah - speaking of that- this bike was originally a CA model, if that makes any difference. According to my manuals, it does not, as the jetting appears to be the same for all US models across the board. Theres the long story. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Overall, I love this bike, and have had a blast riding it! I know there is competition out there, but for the bucks, this is the deal ! many thanks - Les

tail pipe extension.

I just uploaded a picture to the files section of my exhaust tip mod. It's a 1 inch copper water pipe fitting (45 degree street) I bought from Home Depot (hardware store). I silver brazed it with a oxy-act torch. I did this to keep the exhaust residue off the rear plastic fender. The copper is a little soft, so if you hit it it will bend. I couldn't find anything else like stainless steel that could easily be made to fit. So I used copper.
