After several years of street only motorcycles, I am returning to my dual purpose roots. Much research continues to point to klr for kind of riding I plan to do (no long trips, mostly puttering about back road exploring, power line and fire road type trails). Klr weight is a concern to me, so how much wieght can be shed? Pipe must be worth some poundage, as well as the huge tank. Personally I don't need a 300? mile range on any bike, as my skinny ass is crying for relief after about 2 hours (even in a car). Who makes plastic tanks that will fit, again, willing to sacrifice some volume for weight? Saw one in the chapparal catalog for a klx, about 4 gallons if I remember right--will KLX parts interchange? Any other weight loss ideas, even if they are of the "get a KTM" variety are appreciated. Thanks for letting me ramble on. Chris 2000 Suzuki Bandit 1200 (for sale!)

Why are you looking at the KLR, if its not long trips and the fuel range? The DR650 sounds right up your alley, maybe even an XR650. Both, especially the Honda, are much more dirtable, you'll enjoy your off-road time more. Rich

Change was in the '96 model year. Bigger clutch basket without the kickstart option, bigger counterbalancer, larger crank and changes in cam timing. Todd A9
