new (used) klr - couple of questions...

Post by jimk@spotgraphicsinc.com » Tue May 15, 2001 11:55 am

Hello, I just acquired a new to me 1996 KLR650 with 2700 miles on it and had a couple of questions for the collective wisdom here... 1. What is an "A13" vs "A14" etc.? 2. My temp gauge does not work at all. Is there something I should know to check or just take it in? 3. Headlight lowbeam does not work (High beam is fine). It's one bulb, right? Is there a fuse to check or just replace the bulb? Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim, I'm just a little chatter box today...but I would like to address your third question. I had a similar problem with the light on my 98. Don't buy a new bulb yet. If someone could be more technically correct please help me, but basically this was my problem.... If I remember right, there is a "wiring harness" (plastic thingy were the wires meet) that plugs to the light bulb. The wires are bent over the harness to make a 90 degree angle. There you may find a broken connection. I'm not good with this stuff...my father used a ohm meter to see if there was a break in the circuit. On highbeam it was good, low beam...no juice. Man, I hope this makes some sense... Jason "The Mechanically Challenged" 98 KLR650 Phoenix, AZ

Jim, 1. 1987 KLR 650 = A1 88= A2 89= A3 1996= A10 etc etc. 2. I'm not much good with electrical but I'd check all the connections you can find particularily those leading to the instruments. 3. Right, one bulb but two filaments. There is a fuse but if the fuse was blown you'd have no high or low beam. My experience is the bulbs tend to go one beam at a time. Hope this helps, Cheers Steve

Model type (A) and production year (#). 1987 was the first year of production and so the it was an A1 (A is the U.S. spec version). You have an A10.

I'll leave this one to the wiring gurus on list.

Yep, one bulb fits all. It could be as simple as the 3-prong connector at the back of the headlight being loose or dirty. It's not the fuse if the high beam still works, but the fuse is under the seat. dat brooklyn bum
