Group, wonder if I can get a bit of help....My CVK carb seems to have
a gas overflow problem. Cant seem to be able to adjust the float to
make it stop. Wonder if I should get a new needle seat valve? The
dealer wants 23 bux for that, which is crazy! I always thought that
that needle seat was what turned off the gas as the float level came
up, the tang would push on the needle valve turning off the gas. Well
on mine it has no effect. Gas leaks out the back of the carb. I also
think its sorta strange the way the petcock works. No gas comes out
with the petcock open and has two lines on it. Guess its a vacumm
type system and only pulls gas as the engine cranks or runs. My carb
is getting too much gas. Does it seem like I need a new neddle valve?
I did use some of that gas additive that is used to clean injectors,
would that have messed up the end of the needle valve? Any help will
be appreciated....Thanks, Tom

Tom,
Check out
http://members.aol.com/roundr1/CVK40.html for the carb
manual & message #19567 from the KLR Yahoo web site. More info is
available if you search the message archives for CVK40, float, etc.
Using carb/choke/injector cleaners can lead to problems with the
carb's rubber parts.
You fuel leak can be caused by a faulty float, float needle or
it's seat. Dirt or crud is a common problem that leads to float
level problems. The Kawi service manual has all the specs & info
that you will need. If you have access to almost any Clymer m/c
manual, you'll find useful info about carb theory & adjustments.

List,
I dug up these part numbers for the balancer sprocket and so on, Fred, could you look in to getting a hold of these (price , availability, etc.)?
Here's the part numbers: Balancer sprocket, 18T (2)-#12046-1053; Idler Sprocket,18T (1)-#12046-1114; Guide,RR(1)-#12053-1111; Guide,FR(1)-#12053-1175; Needle Bearing(1)-#92046-1127.
Could you please find out how much this will cost and get back to me? Thanks.

______
perhaps but if you much the diaphragm when you put the carb together (if you take
the top off) it'll cost you a lot more than that...
I always thought that
that needle seat was what turned off the gas as the float level came
up, the tang would push on the needle valve turning off the gas. Well
on mine it has no effect.
________
Tom, it is probably debris between the seat and needle valve...I would take the carb
off, take the jets out, give it a good cleaning...let the fuel flow (you're right it
is a vacuum operated petcock...it will flow by sucking on the small line that goes
to the carb) and then put a clear fuel filter back on and put the carb back
together...look at the needle and seat and if it isn't damaged try without it...set
the float level while you're at it...here is the best carb article around by our
beloved Redondo...
