Usually I prefer kid's movies to adult fare. I'll take Pig in the City or Toy Story (1or 2) any day, over American Beauty (mannered nihilism with a disgusting new age religion ending, "Every moment of life is precious" he said. Bogdan almost barfed) or English Patient (Wasn't that poor Nazi a sensitive fuzzball?). The Rug Rat Marathon that the wife scheduled for last night however, was a more than I could handle. I stayed in the family circle but put in earplugs, poured a stiff one and perused the latest issue of MCN. Couple of things related to recent list topics soon got my attention. Another nightmare experience from a BMW 650GS owner in the letters section. No, BMW didn't address his EFI problem despite pleadings from him, his dealer and the dealers mechanic; he got rid of the bike. Another interesting letter dealt with the wages moto-mechanics earn. Why should we be surprised at the never ending service from hell stories that appear on the list when these guys get $7/hr after training and investing in tools? After 10 years a top wrench wage may hit $35k a year. I'm nothing close to a Marxist but how did the market create this situation? Bogdan

If this is true then I humbly add a qualifier to my previous rant - I DO feel sorry for these guys if this is what they are earning. That's ridiculous, esp considering the shop rates, can anyone qualify those figures? However, unjust pay rates are not exclusive to the motorcycle business. In a perfect world, the teachers and nurses would get paid a reasonable wage, and union based monopolies like the Teamsters would not exist. Rich Hiding under my soapbox now....

Don't hide Rich, I, for one, enjoy your rants. Anyway low wages don't justify shoddy work just makes it more likely. Bogdan

If we paid good teachers, nurses, and motorcycle mechanics what they are worth, there wouldn't be enough left over to pay the professional basketball, baseball football, and soccer players and they would play even worse than they do now. Next thing you know professional sports people would be involved in committing crimes. I like to see my money go where it will benefit me most! Let the teachers, nurses, and motorcycle mechanics subsidize their incomes by selling drugs or something. While these people are whining about their low salaries, we're about to lose our basketball team (Orlando Magic) if we don't cough up a couple hundred million to build them a new stadium. Now that I think about it, you're so right. Vancouver just lost its basketball team (Grizzlies) and I bet it was because those teachers, nurses and mechanics weren't selling enough dope. Boy isn't capitalism a bitch........ There's no free ride, work on your own bike, tutor or home-school your kids. H1 visa's for programmers from Pakistan @ $75k.yr, electric bills up 300% because the safest and cleanest form of power is bad (nuclear), the City of San Francisco paying for sex-chnage operations for city employee's @ $50k a crack, the president selling pardons @ $400k a crack, A-Rod gets $250million (good for him) cause Joe Doe will charge the $50 tickets to see him play, and people wonder why teachers and the like are underpayed.

An obvious answer although it may not be the correct one is too many mechanics and not enough jobs, supply and demand right? Perhaps we should all start taking our bikes in for service eventually the wages will rise and theoreticaly the level of competence will increase. Aren't labor charges $20/$25 per hour in most shops? If that is correct we and the mechanics are being robbed. I've noticed some "freelance" motorcycle repair shops springing up lately Labor is $12/$15 per hour and they have to be good or be gone since their survival depends on the quality of their work. Here in mucho expensive Northern california Bay Area, the dealer labor rate is about $60/hr. In addition I know of one cycle dealer/service shop who is(or once was) willing to pay for specialized cycle mechanic training courses if you come to work for them. Good mechanics are in short supply at certain shops. Conall
