Hello everyone. I'm new to the list and already I'm needing some help from the collective. I just bought a used KLR and am hoping to put some miles on it this coming summer or fall by way of a major tour throughout the American West. Rough route is the following: - Carlsbad, NM on through western NM to eastern AZ into Phoenix - from Phoenix northwest into Las Vegas, NV - out of Las Vegas straight north into Idaho - eastern Idaho (Pocatello, Idaho Falls) into Montana, all the way up to Kalispell - back down into southeastern Montana to the site of Custer's Last Stand (I'm a history/American Indian buff) - east into South Dakota then on into Nebraska The Midwest is my home turf so I'll be able to take it from there. WHAT I'M NEEDING. Good guidance on some out-of-the-way routes (i.e., dirt, gravel, and forest roads) from those of you who call these beautiful places home. I don't imagine I'll have the time to do it ALL on dirt (a guy can wish though), but I would like to have those options available for points all along my route of travel. Road names/numbers, odometer counts, GPS coordinates, names/numbers for necessary maps would all be most welcome. A tip o' the hat to all of you... If you're going north through Idaho you'll be missing the best routes by taking 93 up to Kalispell. From Twin Falls head north on 75 to Stanley, hang out for a short while. It's kind of a cool place. Then get back on 75 for about ten miles and make a left off the highway at Sunbeam....in fact, do it at night, and stop at the hot spring there....it's cool, real cool. Go north, passing Sunbeam and another 8 miles to Bonanza, then to Custer, another mile, and you'll be on the Custer Motorway, it's a nice scenic dirt road that goes to Challis. At Challis, get back on 75 for a couple of miles and make a left (north again) onto Panther Creek/Morgan Creek Road, it'll take you sixty miles or so to the Salmon River Canyon at Shoup. Go east from Shoup a mile or two and get on NF 438, over Horse Creek Pass, it'll take you eventually in to Conner, MT, where you can hook up to 93 and roll into Missoula, then you can take 200 up to Kalispell, or 83, they are both nice rides......go around the east side of Flathead Lake and you'll find yourself at the entrace to Glacier Nat'l Park, you do not want to miss this. Everett Judging from what you've written here, I don't think you are being specific enough with your inquiries. I can't tell exactly what you're asking either. Are you looking for work in the hotel industry? Central FLorida is a hot bed of activity. Search & rescue? Western US. But mostly non-paying positions. Looking for motorcycle adventure? Ask dat brooklyn bum about riding through New York City. Or better yet, ride through Central Florida with a sign on your bike, "I'm gay and I'm coming to take away your guns!" Try searching for more specific lines of work. For instance, if you want to be a hooker for six months, look up prostitution, not warm and fuzzy pleasures, or missionary position not. More power to you! I think you've got a great idea there, but don't know exactly how you're going to execute it.
