I made the commitment to Big Bend on the weekend of February 10th. I wanted
to go over Christmas but it was all booked so this is a good reason to go
now. I'll have to tote the whole family over and stay in the Basin Lodge.
I'll bring my KLR, the daughters KLR 250, and I'd like to bring the XX
since it is a HSTA get together but I think I'll have to pass on that.
There are a number of dirt roads for exploring, no off trail in the
NP. Nice little hot spring down by the river. I love the view from the
lodge at Sunset. There is good camping in the Basin as well, spent many
nights there. No showers if you're into being clean. For that I think you
need to hit the campground on the Rio Grande but I did say there is a hot
spring right?? I'm new to this dirt stuff but look forward to some fun
cruising. The road up to the Basin, while short, is one of my
favorites. And for pavement the road along the River to Presidio is
another great one, just be careful of turns after you come over the top of
hills, fat and lazy cattle, and very slow drivers, mexican and others. Look
forward to meeting anyone over there.

Ride the KLR. If it's anything like the BMW rallies or any other
rally I've been to, if you ride the Honda almost no one will come up
and just start talking to you. OTOH, if you ride the KLR, everyone
will want to know what owning a real "adventure bike" is like. Wear
some big ass boots, and get some for the daughter too! No Kiddin!

Ycccch, the Rio Grande, especially this time of year, is barely a trickle
here in NM, then the open sewer of Juarez, the black canel, gives it a
little more flow, and then somewhere South of there is get more untreated
flow. Has to be some of the nastiest water around. Really, Juarez has
close to 2 million people and no sewerage treatment, just don't have any
open wounds.

It used to be worse than that. On the Mexican side a few miles up river
from the place I used to camp was a town called La Linda. It was a company
town run by (I think) Dow Chemical. It was very hard to get there from
Mexico but a paved road accessed it from the American side. It was obviously
put there to avoid U.S. environmental regulations. They manufactured some of
the chemicals that went into Freon. They dumped stuff into the river. This
knowledge never stopped me from my daily swim and I'm not dead yet, as far
as I can tell. Bogdan

Thanks for the observation. I've undertaken an intense voyage of
self-discovery. Every bit of analysis helps especially if it's about me.
