Yes, it is now available as a standard item, and it is the quietest. It is a
perforated tube with some half moon discs intruding into the thru diameter
to serve as mechanical baffling. It works with the new spark arrestor, which
is a very nicely machined and polished end cap and turndown tip; it simply
has a fine screen built into it, not a mechanical baffle. I bought my system
directly from BigGun because I was working with Paul there to get the
quietest system possible. I bought what was the existing quietest system,
with the new core and tip to follow as soon as released. Now that it is
readily available, Fred should be able to get it. Most everything else that
I have purchased for my A14 has come from Fred (~ $2,000).
This system can go on and improve a bone stock bike, but the benefits of
anything further you do will be further enhanced by having this system. So
jetting or air box mods, and/or carb replacement, will be good, but the
improvement will be considerably better with this system. I suspect these
breathing benefits might rise exponentially with altitude.
You may find that this system, with a few airbox holes and the correct
jetting, gives you all you want without changing carbs. But if you decide to
go with a carb, the WB Mikuni kit goes in fairly easily. I installed my Mik
at the same time as the Progressive 420 rear shock with Larry Roesler
spring, so I had released the rear triangle upper bolts, allowing it and the
airbox to pivot down and away. This makes the carb install a no brainer.
Jetting, needle and cable changes are fairly easily accomplished with this
setup. My only complaint with the WB carb kit is that it came with a Motion
Pro bright finish, pot metal die cast throttle, which works, but isn't very
desireable, IMO. I will be installing a Magura 314 throttle with an
appropriate (but 4" shorter) Terry cable. The WB Mik kit comes with a Terry
cable, but it's the wrong free pull length for the Magura. The gent who
makes the cables at Terry has been great to work with to get the right
stuff.
An added benefit of the intake/exhaust mods I have done is that under
conditions where the temp gauge was pointing toward 12 o'clock before, now
it is pointing toward about 10:30. Definitely running cooler, and that's
important to me here in the SW desert. And the improvement in throttle
response and grunt factor (low & mid range torque) are especially welcome
for working traffic (and being a bit of a Holligan, at times). A bit to my
surprise, the improved throttle response of the direct pull Mikuni didn't
adversly affect off idle, low speed maneuverability, as I thought it might.
Full lock, both feet on pegs turns and other such tight maneuvers are still
easily done.
Only problem with all this is that now that it goes so good, it needs to
have better braking. So I guess I'm going to have to do the MAP Engineering
front rotor. Have already done the stainless line and Dunlop pads on the
rear. And while the stock tires work reasonably well on the street, I would
like something a little more street oriented.
So, bottom line is that, IMHO, the BigGun exhaust system is the first
performance enhancing mod that should be done. I'll try to post some
pictures soon, so all can see how nice it looks installed.
I trashed your original message after replying, without taking notice of
your name, so I only know you as jirvine, so, jirvine, maybe we can meet in
the spring on the Coronado Trail along the AZ/NM border. I've been wanting
to get back over that way for some camping and sightseeing. Still need to
figure a way to take my 12# dog with me aboard the KLR.
Happy Holidays to all,
