Greetings all- First-time poster, longtime listener. *Really* digging this list. Great info, entertainment, and inspiration (the Moab pics.. damn! gotta get out there. & Mariola, well, 'nuff said.). y'all kick ass.. I just got a '98 klr with 9000 miles onnit a couple of weeks ago, my first bike ever. I hear it's a great 'first' bike, but I'm thinking I'm in it for the long haul.. Can't wait to get some distance under my belt. So it's overdue for it's 9000 mile service. The original owner took excellent care of it, but I'd like to find a mechanic who can give it a thorough check-out in addition to the prescribed 9000 mile stuff. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the eastbay/sf area? Should I just take it to a dealer? Concord Kawasaki? Oakland? Know anyone who'd maybe let me hang out for some of it? Ideally I want to be doing most of my own maintenance (once a have a garage..) Thanks for any references you might be able to slide my way. rock on- marko

I keep mine out of shops if at all possible, don't trust 'em. But diablo has a good rep with the KLR guys, and the bmw guys too.

Eric, I go to Walnut Creek BMW/Kawasaki. 1255 Parkside Dr. Walnut Creek. They have a nice service staff. I doubt, however, that they will allow you to watch the servicing in the service bay. Also, they are expensive--$200 for my 600 mile checkup which included a valve adjustment. Jon

There's a chart in one of the manuals that gives torque specs based on bolt or is it bolt head size. I torque mine by feel, just slightly tight. I don't know why that bolt was so recalcitrant. It had anti-seize on it too. Bogdan
