If what I've just said is a given, and we're only focusing on HP and torque, then for me its the power to weight ratio. The more power and torque and less weight I have, the happier I am. More power always = more grins, until the weight becomes an issue. More weight = less grins Also keep in mind that I am happy riding anything with 2 wheels and a motor, like the Rupp 3 1/2 hp mini-bike that I learned to ride on when I was about 7. It didn't have a lot of power, but we rode the wheels off those things and loved it. Ed

Deals Gap, maybe. (Actually, at Crossroads of Time store they used to have a timed record over the 11 miles from the reservoir turnout to the campsite. The speed record was held by a guy on a race-only TZ250, one time when the road was closed for a day.) As for narrow purpose bikes, I have a little story. At a Denizens of Doom Ironhorse Ride and Joust several years ago, a guy on a dualsport (probably a KLR) wanted to lead a group on a trail&fire-road ride on Saturday. All manner of bikes participated, from KLRs, DRs, and XRs, to a couple of R100GSs, to a Cagiva Elefant and a Motomorini Camel. Though I did not attend that ride on my Concours (yeesh!) the story of it was told over the campfire. As the ride went on, it got tougher. The first people to bail and return to the campsite were the BMWs. Then the oddball Italian bikes left together. When they got to the deep sand washes, most of the larger-bore Japanese dualsports bailed. Finally, completing the entire route was a KLR, a bunch of small-bore dualsports, and, and... A Kawasaki GPz750. Just goes to show bikes are not narrow-purpose, riders are. (Ever since then, I've been less than worried when faced with gravel or dirt roads with a streetbike. But the KLR *is* better at hopping curbs. More than power or power/weight, I think a "best bike" is a very personal thing. My favorite bikes in the world are my Concours, my KLR, my RZ350, the Honda Hawk GT, the Yamaha TDM850, any Buell twin (rode one and never grinned so much in my whole life: I got religion). None of them are power/weight champions, none of them are exactly best at anything other than pleasing ME. I had a similar experience on a dual sport ride. I was on my KLR, there were several R100GS' and R1100GS' and one guy on a R100/7 with Avon Gripsters. The only bikes to finish the ride were KLRs and the /7. So it goes to show you, it ain't the bike, it's the rider. MR
