lowering seat height

I know that this has been rehashed several times, but I am asking for some advice because I would like to buy a KLR650 but can't ride it safely the way it is. I have read both good and bad things about Lowering Links. I have a 29" inseam and am very heavy. Any ideas about handling/bottoming out on the street? 99% of my riding will be on the street, at least at first. Do I assume that I would have to slide the forks up in the clamps to match, or do the lowering links go on both ends? Are there any other suspension mods (springs, etc.) that would lower the seat height without turning the KLR into a "hardtail"? I have also read good and bad things about Corbin seats. The seat with the dip would not be an option, as sliding forward would put a quick end to riding, until the swelling goes down. Does the "other" Corbin seat lower seat height? Does any other comfortable seat lower seat height? Please feel free to reply off list. Daniel Cunningham
