I would buy a used klr. You might even have some cash left over. I think the BMW f650gs cost about 8000.00. That is a lot of money. How about the KTM adventurer? The only BMW I thik I would buy is the 1150GS. Of course that is 14000.00. I think I ould look for a used KLR. I would buy a used KLR. Assuming your bike is totaled, I would also buy the salvage rights to the smashed machine and use it as an organ donor. Mark B2 A2

Gary, Take a long hard look at the F650 GS Dakar. I'm in the middle of a test on one right now........and I'm blown away...... Still to early to do any a/b breakdowns yet......... Sorry to here 'bout the dimbulb ... was she blond too.....(:^) In short, your '97 KLR won't be worth very much retail, and from the damage that you stated, the cost of getting the thing repaired would be prohibitive, IMHO. I don't want to sound mercenary, but you'll wind up being into that bike for way too much. Take the insurance money and find another bike. A nice clean, late model KLR like yours should be found for ~$3000~ or so. The Beemer is nice too, but it costs so much $money$... Good Luck Joe Nassif SFNM A13

Gary, Here's my suggestion, let the insurance company write it off and then see if you can buy it back as scrap. Some companies routinely do this. I rebuilt an A7 with severe front end damage: forks,instruments,tank fairing etc. Used it for a year and a half (8000 kms),with no problems. Just because it's been damaged that doesn't necessarily mean 'it'll never be the same' My two cents..... Cheers Steve Pye

Did buy back my '98 Concours in Aug '98 with 18K miles for $1250, replaced left mirror,w/s and welded left saddlebag bracket. ..now at 70K miles it is fine! Low speed drop but that abs and other parts ..expensive on the ins estimate... I just live with a few scratches that most others don't notice! Dan Paulsen Graham WA
