Hi Jim, Sounds like a really interesting ride . I envy you your sense of achievment, know that its good, spent sometime picking up my KLR in a mud puddle. I fitted a Fredette chain guard to stop debris derailing the chain. You know, the double sided aloy plates and wear blocks top and bottom. It works great for me and I know my chain won't come off. It's not listed for the KLR, but the KLX one fits. It can be noisy at first and needs carefull aligning, mine went on ok, but you might need to wang the bracket to help. Regards, Brian A14 D17
