I signed up with this group about a week ago and have enjoyed reading
the e-mails. I am about 95% sure of getting a KLR650. I have been
looking at all the web sights and think that the KLR is the bike for
me. The last motorcycle I had was a 198? Honda Magna V45. I lived
in Arizona at the time and it was my only form of transportation for
a 1- years. I have not been on a motorcycle in over 9 years.
With
the KLR I plan on riding in every weather condition with road
conditions permitting. With all that said I have some questions that
I could use some help with.
1. What type of helmet would be best? Most of my riding will be
commuting back and forth to work (80%) and riding on fire and logging
trails. I have looked at the dirt and street helmets and can see the
differences but want to understand the performance and reasons they
are designed differently.
2. I have been looking and reading about jackets and pants for
motorcycle riding. I am thinking about the HEIN GERICKE Boost
Jackets and pants. Any thoughts on this brand or on other quality
riding gear would be appreciated.
3. When it comes to boots I have been thinking about a steel-
toed Danner Ft Lewis boot. I wear 10 EE. Any thoughts on boots
would help.
4. Gloves? I have no idea on what would be best.
Thanks
Rick

thinking about getting a klr650
Hello,
I'm quite happy with my Shoei RF-800 helmet, comfortable and quiet. The
Fog City Proshield, installed last week, really helps keep the fogging
to a mimimum. I prefer a full face helmet with visor to help stay warm
when the temperature drops below freezing. Also, I wear prescription
lenses so goggles are kind of a hassle.
First Gear Kilimangero jacket/overpants are what I typically wear over
my work clothes. Nice and warm, no problems so far. I have not worn
them on a hot day yet. It seems like the temperature dropped 10 C the
day I bought the bike and its never going to warm up
I'm still undecided on boots, some friends tell me to go with tall
hunting boots but the laces are a concern...don't want them getting
caught up in a peg. Others tell me to get a proper biking boot like the
ones put out by SIDI. I'll be scanning this thread with interest to see
what the good people of K.O.R.G. recommend. Until I do purchase
something my thinsulate hiking boots, with the laces taped over with
duct tape are filling in acceptably.

Afriend of mine has a Boost jacket and he really really likes it. I think the lack of vents may make it hot during sunny warm weather.> 2. You can't beat Tourmaster for gloves, in my experience. Always a good product, they make jackets and saddlebags too, good ones. Check out tourmaster.com.> 4. Gloves? I have no idea on what would be best.
