new slant on tires

I've been on the KLR about a month now and have taken it off road about
three or four times. While I'm an avid mountain biker, I haven't been on a
dirt motorcycle for about 25 years. It's a little different with 350 lbs.
under you instead of 27 lbs.
With all this talk about tires, I feel the stock ones are pretty good for
the way I ride (highways and EASY trails). Although, every now and then,
I'll hit a patch of mud or slime and wish for a little more knob. But then
I realize they wouldn't give me the ride the stock ones do on the highway.
I understand that it's easy to get a better dirt tire or a better highway
tire but it's always at the expense of the other. My question is: is there
a tire that is better all around than the stock tire (i.e. better on the
highway AND on the trails) and lasts as long?
Thanks,
Leon Droby
