OJ, Unfortunately, you are dealing with Kawasaki, a company that sometimes defies logic. If I were a betting man, I'd say the KLR will be around for a couple of years more. Kawasaki is a very conservative company and will hold on to models well past their prime. Gino

As far as I know the KLR should be around a while longer. With the contract to supply the Marine Corps scouts, it would be stupid of them to stop making the civilian model. That is why they changed to olive drab on the 2000 models. They are the same thing. "Swede".

Others are more versed in this business model than I but... I've been looking at Kawi for a while and here is what I see as it relates to manufacturing: Big honkin' stamps and other misc tooling equipment is purchased for a model. The tooling equipment is set up (takes a week or so) and production for a model year begins. Equipment wears out = explanation for sloppy mfg tolerances. Two or three years and all tooling is paid for. Every bike they build sells. Why make a new one? They're working with 18-year-old equipment and they haven't had to invest in seriously new technology in 15+ years. It makes sense to me. No flash, no pizzazz, no bells and whistles. Also no cost other than labor, raw materials and maintenance. Just sales and cash in the bank. I think the KLR will be around for a while and if it does go away the replacement will be a modified version of the same. Again, remember that you are dealing with Kawasaki. They still build the KZ1000 police bike, but do not offer it to the public. Gino

Your probably right, I'm sure most of the manufacturers do this kind of thing, it just gets under my skin. I did call my local shop to get a price from them, and they came up with 570.00, which is better, but still quite a rip off IMO. Anyway, I am going to fork out the 500.00 deductible, and let the shop do the work, and run through the bike. With all the parts ( subframe, handlebars, foot peg bracket, tail light clutch cable, and labor, I'm sure it is going to be well over a grand. The guy at my local shop gave me a number for an outfit he said has built him a subframe before, but I would rather have the correct OEM piece on the bike for future resale, and confidence in stability. Can't say I'm surprised this thing bent, the girlfriend launched it about 7-10' in the air, and it came down right on the corner of the subframe. I just thank our lucky stars it did not land on her, if this is what it did to reinforced aluminum. Both of her wheels are staying on the dirt from now on. Happy, and safe riding.
