1st valve adjustment, the saga continues...

Hello all, I was hoping to be able to report that all went well with my very first 500 mile valveadjustoilchangecleantheairfiltercheckalltheloosenutscleanandadjus tthechain job. But it has not. I am in Shim Hell. All went well at the dealership, they were more than happy to swap me my old shims for their old shims...pleasant, friendly etc... But, I don't recall reading anywhere that there were different DIAMETER shims. Two of the shims they gave me were too large in diameter, i.e. won't fit in the bucket. Did I miss something? Did they miss something? Of course none of that would be anything more than an irritation, if it wasn't for the fact that I was spending an inordinate amount of time fiddling with and trying to get the "too large" size shim in the worst of them all Left Exhaust bucket and...OOOPS. It kinda sounded like when you drop a silver dollar into a slot machine (Before you pull the handle) I am afraid it may have went allllll the way down. Major Bummer. I Was not able to see it with any size flashlight nor any amount of eye straining. Next trip to dealership, buy the service manual and supplement. Man I am not looking forward to pulling the stuff off to get to that shim. The shim that I will eventually have to return to the dealer to get the right diameter.... Anyone have any luck turning the bike upside down and shaking it? I guess I will know better and be much more carefull next time. Ed

The second valve adjustment is easier as you've learned the most important part (keep shim out of hole) Good Luck Larry

and of course, one of the most important things, is that your dealer pretty clearly gave you some incorrect shims, since they're all supposed to be the same size. this seems to me like it would be hard to do. mw

I had something similar happen (with a bolt), and had a devilish time getting it out. First thing to try is fishing it out with a magnet: go to an auto parts store and buy one of the telescoping magnet retrievers and see if you can get far enough down there to fish it out. If you can't get it that way, try pulling the alternator cover: I was able to fish out my bolt from *behind* the rotor without pulling it off (better hope you don't have to as it requires a special puller). While you're at the auto parts store looking for magnets, look for the "pencil" sized one too; if you can find one, go over to the section where they have the fuel and vacuum line and buy a couple feet of whichever one fits snugly over the non-business end of the pencil magnet. What you want to try is feeding the pencil magnet down into the cam chain gallery on the end of the hose as far as you can to fish out the shim. The pencil size isn't very strong, but if the larger one can't get down there, maybe you'll get lucky with the pencil kind. P.S.: I also had the "oversize shim" thing happen and had to go back to the dealer. I learned that there are three or four diameters used on different Kwackers, and at least one is almost identical to the eye to the KLR shim but about 2mm too large. Bummer. Good luck! Oh yes, I usually long for the KLR passing by those gravel roads and side trails on the ZG10...sigh///..... Of course if you are going fast enuf they are a blur. Dan
