I had just stashed my gun and pepper spray several miles before hitting
the Canadian Border several years back. The Border guard asked if I had
any weapons and I was telling him I had hid them back down the road. He
was then asking why I carry them. I told him the Pepper spray was for
Animals that deserved a 2nd chance.. The Gun was for Humans whom should
know better.

Mike, This question comes up once in a while on the Baja page. The general
feeling is that any thing that the authorities in Mexico perceive to be a
weapon, is in fact a weapon. They will confiscate it and may be arrest you.
I carry a Leatherman tool because the first thing you see is the pliers, not
the knife blade. I also have a sling in my ABS tool carrier, but it is in
two pieces and no one has noticed it. "Never trouble trouble and trouble
will never trouble you". . . my Mom.

Going out on the beemer this morning but wanted to make one post on
chains.
My first KLR chain (stock) lasted 16,900 miles and was still looking
good but I elected to replace it with sprockets also while getting
ready to leave on a 3000 mile trip toIdaho and back. It only
received wd-40, nothing more.
The new one, RK XO, is getting one drop per o-ring, every 500 mi. of
20-50 oil from an old liquid wrench can, on the advice of a local
mechanic who races his street legal GSXR. He says his GSXR chain has
20,000 miles on it and looks like new.
