valve tapping noise
Hello Listers,
I would be grateful for any input provided. I recently did my valves on my A-14
and double checked the clearances after hearing light tapping noise. The valves
are to spec as close as I could get them. I am using Honda HP 20w-50 oil. No
problems with power or abnormal operation. I am sure you must have covered this
before but I am fairly new to the group. Do any of you KLR owners have similar
experiences to the aforementioned? Is the light tapping noise a normal
condition? I have checked /adjusted the balancer tensioner as per Eldon's
write-up; all bolts torqued to spec.
Again I am grateful for any information you people could provide,
Respectfully,
Peter

Peter, if you checked and rechecked and adjusted your balancer chain you've done all you can and what you hear is what you have. I'm hard of hearing so it all escapes me! Tim Bernard can't stand the noise my Guzzi valve train makes...hmmm awfully quiet to me (g)... Kurt> I would be grateful for any input provided. I put in the ear plugs and all the noises go away. Bike runs just fine. BTW, I use hi-test gas. Bob Kaub>experiences to the aforementioned? Is the light tapping noise a normal >condition? Thanks for the input on this subject guys, (Kurt and Bob). I feel more at ease
knowing the fact that these engines are noisy by design. I do tend to get
sickly into diagnostics and preventive maintenance beyond what is required.
Thanks for hitting the "reset button".

One more thing. After switching from Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic to Honda HP
20w-50; gear shifting is a lot smoother and even quieter.

When is the last time you lubed your chain???
Clean it and lube it up good and see what happens!!! Lube every fill up!!!

valve tapping noise
Peter,
The other listers will likely give you words to keep you from
worrrying. After a very bad experience, let me give you something to
check/worry about. I had a low mileage 95 KLR. At 2500 miles, the bike
had a slight click (different from the usual sounds). The conclusion of
those who heard it was that the valves were mis-adjusted. Had the
valves checked, everything was just fine, but the noise was still there.
Went on a 2000 miles trip with lots of high speed cruising. The noise
got really bad. It sounded like things were hammering themselves to
death in the engine. Valves still checked OK. Timing chain checked OK.
After a lot of looking (and expense), the problem was finally
identified. The sprocket that drives one of the cam shafts had come
loose and was rocking back and forth. The shear pin was rocking and
elongating the hole in the sprocket. The noise was the valves banging
onto their seats as the camshaft rotated back and forth relative to the
sprocket.
The way to check this was to turn the engine over by hand while looking
and listening to the camshaft and valve lifter.

nklr hams-> now cb's?
Along those lines, I was wondering if anyone has successfully installed a
CB on their KLR. I was thinking of one as I don't have a radio license and
www.cyberrebate.com has a Cobra CB handheld for free (well, $189 with a $189
rebate). I just read an article in Rollin Mag about installing a CB and it
makes me very tempted to dive into it. My main concern would be the bike
being able to provide enough juice to run the radio... I think the Cobra had
a 4w output.
Also what is the prefered FRS radio for bike to bike communications? Has
anyone done this? Cyberrebate also has FRS radios cheap, and now that I
think about it, FRS is probably more in line with what I would want. I would
most likely go with a dual speaker, chinbar mounted mic rig for either, but
I have no experience with these and I don't want to drop $300 on one
Chatterbox FRS rig (what is the point of only having one?)...
The Cyberrebate URL is:

Thanks again,

If you haven't already done so, check out the Motorcycling Amateur
Radio Club's page.

I have not tried one yet, but the throat mics look interesting.
Picks
up the sound vibration from your voice box so you don't get wind
noise. I just stick to using my radios when not moving, but often do
pack an ICOM 706 when heading out for the weekend. I've destroyed 2
HTs due to the vibration of riding off road, so try to be careful
there. If interested, set up a time and we can discuss this further
on the air some day.
