Hi folks, just wanted to say that this list is right on. I was a member on another list and the horseshit that got posted there totally turned me off and I "unsubbed for good" ( following Gino's lead ). The amount of off topic posting on this list is minimal, and unless you folks are from another country ( that doesn't make you a bad person), I regretfully say that this topic is not NKLR. Matter of fact, I think it's important ( to me). Most of us ride on dirt from time to time and, because we are motorcyclists and generally not sheep, organizing political support for anything generally rubs us the wrong way. However, the Roadless Initiative and similar legislation will affect us in a very negative way. I don't mind the informational posts, alerts and so on, and I will take the time out to send e-mails or mail a signed letter to my representatives in the government just to let them know at least one of there constituency gives a crap about having the right to ride their KLR off the asphalt. Some folks have even been kind enough to send links or messages I can cut and paste, add my name, and either print and mail or just e-mail. Even a lazy bastard like me can find the energy to do that. As long as we don't degenerate into forums for flaming personal attacks or pontificating, critical judgments on other people's posts, I say keep the info flowing. There could be another list set up called " I am King of the Internet and you are an idiot" or something similar for a those personal (NKLR) discussions, but this IS the KLR list, and it is the best. Dear Stuart Mumford, (and all listmembers) I didn't know an opinion was something you had to : A: Test to get a license for. (Which involves) 1. A skills test performed on the motorcycle. 2. A written test, to show you can do more than simply ride the thing. 3. An eye examination, to show your sight is good enough to warrant being on the road. 4. Having the motorcycle properly insured, as to protect yourself and others from mishaps. OK now people, here's where I take what's known as a CURVE. Some folks get lost on this concept, so hold on! While I showed the basic licensure procedures for many people (Add in taking the MSF Basic Rider Course if you're in the military) I'm gonna show the reason I consider riding a motorcycle to be a privilege, rather than a right. While it is our "right" as citizens to ride a motorcycle, it only is if we went through the steps I outlined in "A". I don't think there will be any real disagreement on the general statements I made, though there will probably be some debate on the actual steps involved due to local ordinance. Now what if your "right" were taken away? I don't mean those "liberal-bleeding-heart-draft-dodging-nasties that wanna keep me off public land". I'm talking about the irresponsible motorcyclist who does something to get his ability to ride a motorcycle (a privilege, not a right as he soon finds out) taken away from him. Whether it be an alcohol related incident, or reckless driving, what our hypothetical motorcyclist, "Stew" now finds out, is that his "right" to ride a motorcycle is not a right at all. It was a privilege all along. So kiddies (and those adults who get so wrapped up in being huffy when it comes to land-issues that they make asinine statements about "on THIS list, Info = Good, Opinions = Bad", knowing full well that if they have been on this list any length of time, people are so sick of attitudes based on personal feeling, that there is a list made just for the bitching, whining, "Ed Anger" on 2-wheels) I think I just showed how riding a motorcycle (in a society that puts limits on how we ride, as well as who gets to ride). I hope this is good "info", wouldn't want to get some cyber-person I'll never even see angry at me, to the point where they might hurl digital insults because I made a point they didn't seem to like. Does anyone make a throttle tube for the KLR that is longer then the stock one? The stock one is 4-1/2 inches long.
